At Pioneer Dental Group, we work with families to help build great long-term oral health habits. This is especially important for the youngest members of our families — they are at the perfect age to instill some life-long habits that will help them stay healthy in the long run. For today’s blog, we have some great tips on how to help your child build great habits. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us. We would be delighted to help you.

#1: Start as early as possible.

The best thing you can do to help you child build great oral health habits is to start early! As soon as your child develops teeth, they should be learned about the importance of maintaining them. This means getting them involved with brushing and flossing and taking them to the dentist. You can read more on how to do all of this below. Early is key! It’s never too early to begin teaching your child about the importance of dental health.

However, if your child is already older and still does not grasp the importance, it’s not too late. Start now. Use some of the tactics below to get them involved and learning. It’s never too late to set them on the right path to a happy, healthy smile for life.

#2: Brush with them!

One of the best ways to get your child interested in dental health, especially when they are young, is to brush along side them! Most kids want to be just like their parents when they grow up. Show them what an example of excellent home hygiene looks like! This is a great opportunity to bond with your child, show them the ropes, and get them interested in taking care of their smile long term.

#3: Let them choose their hygiene products.

Another great way to grab your child’s interest is to give them a little bit of control in the matter! There are lots of cool toothbrushes for kids and fun toothpastes to choose from. There are various flavor pastes and brushes that are their favorite color or even Disney character to choose from. Buy them one of these fun options or even take them to the store with you and let them choose! They will love getting to be involved as well as having a fun brush and toothpaste.

#4: Teach them the importance of flossing.

Flossing is a majorly underestimated form of dental hygiene in this country. Did you know that about ONE THIRD of Americans do not floss their teeth AT ALL? It is impossible to avoid dental problems without flossing. Start early with your child and teach them the importance of flossing their teeth every day.

Flossing is important for dislodging debris and removing bacteria that may get stuck in between the teeth. These are areas where your toothbrush simply can’t reach. Without flossing, this debris and bacteria just stays there, wreaking havoc and contributing to disease and decay. Make a difference in your child’s smile health by teaching them about flossing.

#5: Use apps to keep them interested.

Still having trouble keeping their interest? There are lots of great apps that make brushing fun for kids! Check out the apps called Brush DJ and Disney Magic Timer. There are others as well. These apps can be used to make hygiene time more interesting for your little ones.

#6: Bring them in for checkups on a regular basis.

Want to make sure they get a great foundation for dental health? Bring them into to see our team for regular checkups. We’ll help them get used to visiting the dentist and teach them a lot of dental health and how important it is! We see children of all ages. We look forward to meeting you.
