Can Dental Implants Lead To Serious Pain?
- June 5, 2016
You may have heard some dental implant horror stories before – people who have them placed are in immense pain, they have to be removed, or they’re suffering from chronic migraines that don’t have a diagnosis. Even Dick Van Dyke has a horror story of an implant gone wrong!
When placing dental implants every millimeter of precision is essential. Implant placement has been around for a while, and before modern 3D imaging was available implants did sometimes cause problems for patients. Thankfully you don’t have to worry about that at Pioneer Dental Group.
How Implant Placement Used To Go Wrong
Dental implants are small titanium posts that are about the same size as a tooth root. They’re placed in your jaw just like natural teeth, and once they’re healed up they’re just as tough too. Implants are restored with either a single tooth, bridges, denture-supporting hardware, or a whole row of permanent teeth.
In the ideal world dental implants would be free of your nerves and blood vessels, but that isn’t always the case, or at least it wasn’t in the past. Before the advent of cone beam scanning it was a lot harder to place dental implants – the only thing your dentist had to go on was a flat 2D image of your jaw.
No matter how many different X-rays, impressions, or snapshots of your mouth were taken there was still some guesswork with implant placement. Dentists had to make calculations and estimations of the position of nerves, and if the implant was placed at just a slightly wrong angle it could mean intense pain and a need for implant removal.
Modern Dental Implant Placement Eliminates The Guesswork
When it comes to dental implants the past is definitely the past, at least at our Oregon City office. The guesswork and estimation that used to go into dental implants is completely eliminated by our 3D cone beam scanner and advanced computer modeling.
3D scans that we take of your mouth show us every single part of your facial anatomy with amazing pinpoint accuracy. There’s nothing we won’t be able to know the exact position of – muscles, nerves, blood vessels – you name it!
When we plan dental implant placement we don’t just work in two dimensions – we use the 3D model of your face to plan the perfect implant positioning. You won’t ever need to worry about a bad angle, nerve damage, or the kinds of headaches that affected Dick Van Dyke – those days are over!
What We Can Do With Dental Implants
If you’re dealing with the loss of even a single tooth, then dental implants are the ideal choice for you. Not only do they offer the most natural look available today, but they’re also able to restore nearly all of the natural chewing force you had before tooth loss.
People dealing with dentures often find dental implants to be a life-transforming change. While dentures are never permanently attached to your mouth, leaving them to fall out and embarrass you, implants are secured to your jaw permanently. There won’t ever be an accident with dental implants!
We use implants at our Oregon City office to treat a variety of cases, and we’re confident we have exactly what you need. We offer:
- Traditional single tooth implants
- Mini implants that are great for patients with reduced bone mass
- All-On-4 implants, which use four dental implants to support a permanent full mouth bridge
- All-On-6 implants, which are similar to All-On-4 but with six implants
- Implant-retained dentures, which use a series of balls and sockets or bars and clasps to secure your dentures in place
Not only that, but we can also place dental implants immediately after tooth extraction. You’ll never have to wait months to heal when you come to us for implant placement!
