Tooth Removal and Extractions | Oregon City Dentist

Tooth decay is one of the most common reasons people visit the dentist. In addition, tooth decay is one of the most common reasons that patients need to have their teeth extracted. As decay eats away at your tooth, the pulp and nerve can become infected, and your protective enamel will disappear.

Often, there are procedures that can be done to help save your tooth, such as a root canal or a filling. However, they do not always work when severe decay has taken over. If you are left with no options when it comes to your decayed teeth, and if infection risks spreading to nearby teeth, extraction may be the only way to go.

Once your tooth has been extracted, Dr. Pioch will discuss tooth replacement options with you, including bridges and implants.

How Does an Extraction Take Place?

When you come in for your tooth extraction, Dr. Pioch will begin by using a local anesthetic to numb the area. Once it’s numb, Dr. Pioch will begin loosening the tooth with a special tool. You will not be able to feel any type of pain from the procedure.

Once the tooth is loose, Dr. Pioch will use another instrument to quickly but carefully remove the tooth from your gums. Once the procedure is over, you will be able to go about your day like normal, as long as you follow the aftercare instructions carefully.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Dr. Pioch is able to handle all types of extractions in the office, including third molars, or wisdom teeth. The last teeth to come in your mouth, wisdom teeth do not always erupt through your gums. If your impacted wisdom teeth are causing pain or become infected, Dr. Pioch may suggest removing them to keep your mouth healthy and pain-free. He may also suggest removing wisdom teeth to prevent overcrowding or to prepare for orthodontic treatment. In severe cases, Dr. Pioch may refer you out to a local dental specialist.

Sedation Options for Your Extractions

When you are having an extraction performed, Dr. Pioch and his team will make sure that you are numb before even beginning the process. We want all our patients to feel comfortable and relaxed. Although the numbing agent takes away the pain, some patients experience anxiety and fear over their procedure. To help with this, Dr. Pioch offers free sedation options, including nitrous oxide and oral sedation. Ask us for more details today.
