Have you been thinking about dental implants? Have you been wondering, “Will dental implants help me?”
Maybe now you are asking, “What are dental implants?”
We’ll try to answer those questions and more in a moment. Just know that dental implants can improve your smile and your self-confidence.
“False teeth” have come a long way in the course of human history, and dental implants are one of the best developments for anyone who is missing teeth.
At Pioneer Dental Group in Oregon City, we provide a variety of types of dental implants because we want to our patients to have the best teeth, and the best lives, they can have.
Reasons to consider implants
If you are missing one tooth or an entire arch of teeth, dental implants could be the best way to restore your mouth to its full strength.
According to the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), an estimated 178 million people in the United States are missing at least one tooth. According to the latest U.S. Census estimates, 322 million people are living in the United States.
That means more than half of all U.S. residents have lost one or more teeth. Among that group, several million Americans do not have any teeth, according to the ACP.
If you are missing a tooth, you are actually in the majority. Yes, it is better to have a full set of healthy, natural teeth, but if you don’t, dental implants are the next best thing.
Dental implants will help your mouth and your remaining teeth in multiple ways. Let’s consider a few of those reasons.
First, dental implants protect your teeth. Implants are placed directly into your jawbone. This stimulates growth in your jawbone, which is good for any adjacent teeth.
Second, dental implants fill in gaps in your smile. If you are missing a tooth or multiple teeth, you probably can’t help noticing the gap when you look in the mirror. Other people notice it too, even if they are too polite to mention it.
Dental implants that have been fitted with crowns, bridges, or dentures can complete your smile and give you the appearance of a full set of teeth.
Third, dental implants allow you to eat any foods you like. If you are missing teeth, have damaged teeth, or are using adhesive-secured dentures, you may have to avoid certain foods. Steak might be a little too hard to chew. Popcorn could be risky if you bite into a kernel. Apples might be too firm to bite cleanly.
With dental implants, you will regain nearly all of your original chewing power. This means that steak, popcorn, apples, and several other foods can go back on your menu.
How implants work
As we mentioned, dental implants are placed directly into your jawbone. This is because the implant is replacing the root of your missing tooth.
The root is what holds you tooth in place in your jaw. When you lose a tooth or have a tooth removed, that leaves a gap in your smile and a hole in your jaw.
The dental implant is a titanium screw that fills in that hole. Implants have abutments on the ends that can hold crowns, bridges, or dentures depending on how many teeth need replacing. These are made to resemble real teeth, and most people won’t be able to tell the difference.
After you implants are placed, you will need time to heal. During your recovery, the bone around the implant will secure it like the root of a tooth, meaning it will be firm and stable.
At our practice, we offer a variety of dental implants that will help our patients in and around Oregon City. Some of those implants are:
• All-on-4 — If you need to replace a full arch of teeth with dentures, we can strategically place four implants in your jaw and fit dentures to them. These are much more secure than traditional dentures, which are held in place with an adhesive.
• All-on-6 — This is similar to the All-on-4 implants, only with six implants instead.
• Mini implants — These are smaller than traditional implants, which means you will heal faster after your procedure. These aren’t as strong as traditional implants, but they are much more secure than adhesive dentures.
